So, think of OCI as something like this. So, OCI is your lifetime entry pass to India, and your passport is your identity proof.

Today, for most people, the OCI card itself does not need change. What they need to do is updating their passport information online. Think of it like updating their contact information. So, your OCI status would remain the same. All you're updating is the passport that it was linked to. And this change has simplified the process for a lot of people living abroad. And here is where things gets little confused. These rules are based on the age. Let me give you a quick example.
3:43 Let's assume someone moved to US 10 years ago. They applied for their OCI card, received it, and since then they haven't thought about it. Then one day, they renewed their passport. In their mind, they were thinking their OCI card is still valid, and they assume everything is fine. And in most cases, they are absolutely right. But depending on the age, there is a small thing that needs to be done online, and that's where age-based rules come into picture.
4:12 OCI rules are actually divided into three age groups. Once you understand this, it becomes very straightforward. Under age 20, children and teenagers get their passports updated frequently as they grow up. If you are someone under age 20 and you have a passport renewed, you need to upload three things to the OCI portal. First, a copy of your new passport, which includes the picture as well as the address page. A recent photograph, which is taken on a white background and facing front. And finally, signature of the child if they are above age five, or their thumb print if they are below age five. And this needs to be done on a white paper, you scan it and upload it. That's it. You need these three things to be uploaded every time you renew their passport when they are below age 20.

However, once they reach adulthood, there is a one-time OCI reissue that is recommended that is required, and it typically happens around age 20. After that, the rules becomes much easier. When your passport gets updated, you just don't need to update anything until the age 50. They can continue traveling to India with their new passport, existing OCI card, provided there are no changes to the personal details. Online upload is
