Healthcare network: the single most important city filter
Most NRI retirement city mistakes come from under-estimating healthcare access. The right question is not "does the city have good hospitals" but "is there a tertiary multi-specialty hospital within 30 minutes of my home, with a 24x7 cardiac catheterization lab, oncology, and a stroke-ready neurology team?"
City-by-city hospital network summary (2026):
- Bengaluru: Best-in-India depth. Mazumdar Shaw (oncology), Narayana (cardiac), Apollo, Fortis, Manipal, Aster, Sri Jayadeva (cardiac). All within 45 minutes of most central / east / south Bengaluru locations.
- Chennai: Very strong. Apollo, MIOT (orthopedic + cardiac), Fortis, Sri Ramachandra, Global, Madras Medical Mission (cardiac). All within 45 minutes of central Chennai.
- Hyderabad: Very strong. Apollo, Yashoda, KIMS, Care, AIG, NIMS (government). All within 45 minutes of central Hyderabad.
- Pune: Excellent. Ruby Hall, Jehangir, Aditya Birla, Sahyadri, Deenanath Mangeshkar. All within 30-45 minutes of central Pune / Kothrud / Koregaon Park / Baner.
- Coimbatore: Very good. KG Hospital, GKNM, Sri Ramakrishna, PSG, Kovai Medical. All within 30 minutes of RS Puram / Saibaba Colony / Peelamedu.
- Kerala (Kochi): Good. Amrita (AIMS, multi-specialty), Aster Medcity, Lourdes, Rajagiri. Specialty depth limited outside Kochi — Trivandrum has KIMS and Sree Chitra but smaller.
- Goa: Moderate. Manipal Goa is good for general care, but complex oncology, cardiac surgery, and neurology cases get referred to Mumbai (1-hour flight) or Bengaluru (1.5-hour flight).

NRI community density (the social fit that nobody else measures)

5 common city-choice mistakes
- Picking a city without visiting in your retirement season. Hyderabad in May is 42°C and humid; not what you'd expect from "year-round pleasant." Visit in the worst month before committing.
- Picking based on first NRI friend's recommendation alone. Their retirement priorities (climate, community, cost) are not yours. Use the matrix above as the first filter, then visit 2-3 cities.
- Choosing senior living community before healthcare network. The senior living decision comes after the city decision. Reversing the order is the #1 cause of "stuck in wrong city" retirements.
- Ignoring airport access. If you have US / UK family visiting 2-3 times a year, direct-flight cities (Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Mumbai) save 6-10 hours of connecting flights each way and INR 30,000-80,000 per trip.
- Not checking NRI community density in target neighbourhood. A "good" city can still have a thin NRI community in the specific neighbourhood you choose. Visit the specific neighbourhood, not just the city.
