Why We Left the US After 20 Years: 5 NRI Return-to-India Reasons

After spending majority of my adulthood in the US with a successful career and good life, here are the 5 reasons our family decided to move back to India.

🇺🇸 20 Years in US 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Family Decision 🎯 5 Key Reasons 💡 Personal Story

The 5 Reasons We Moved to India

  • ✓ Empty Nester Concerns: Life abroad would be lonely when kids leave
  • ✓ Extended Family Support: Nuclear family vs. cousins, grandparents, relatives
  • ✓ Kids Development: Adaptability, jugaad, outdoor play, competitive spirit
  • ✓ Lifestyle Choice: Support system, services, help more accessible
  • ✓ Financial Flexibility: Leave corporate world, follow passion, money stretches further

Why Leave the US After 20 Years and Return to India?

For this family, the return was not about the US being bad or India being perfect. The decision came from a life-stage shift: young kids, aging parents, extended family, future empty-nester worries, day-to-day support, and financial flexibility started mattering more than the predictability of US life.

Do not copy the move blindly. Use this story with the Desi Return decision framework and the return-to-India checklist guide before you act.

Reason What Changed After 20 Years What to Check Before Copying It
Empty-nester future Future life abroad felt lonely once kids left home. Whether India offers real community, not just nostalgia.
Extended family Grandparents, cousins, and relatives became more important. Actual family proximity, boundaries, and support reliability.
Kids' development Adaptability, outdoor play, and cultural roots became priorities. School timing, board fit, language comfort, and child age.
Support system Doing everything alone abroad felt fragile during illness or stress. Healthcare, domestic help, parent care, and neighborhood fit.
Financial flexibility Money could buy more time, help, and optionality in India. Income plan, tax residency, investments, housing, and runway.

I did my engineering in Hyderabad and immediately after Bachelors went to US for my Masters in 2002. After graduation, I worked in Lab Robotics and non-IT field with a successful, fulfilling career. I'm grateful for life in US - professional and personal development, lifelong good friends. There was never a moment where I felt "why did I come to US." Life was great. That's where I spent majority of my adulthood. So then why did we move back to India?

Two Important Points Before the Reasons

1. Environment Matters for Your Priorities

As life changes, so do our priorities:

  • When young: You want to explore, grow your career, take the world
  • Starting a family: Stability and raising kids become priority
  • Getting older: Focus shifts to connection, community, and purpose

The environment you choose to live plays a significant role in supporting these priorities. For instance, if you're starting a business, being in Silicon Valley or Bangalore is advantageous because the ecosystem supports entrepreneurship. For us, moving to India aligned better with our long-term goals as a family.

2. Not Having Regrets in Life

"Sometimes life is comfortable and it's tempting not to rock the boat. We had a very comfortable life in US. But one of the biggest lessons I learned is the importance of living without regrets. As we get older, we often wish we had tried something, taken the leap, explored that opportunity. Instead of living with unanswered what-ifs, we decided to evaluate our options. It wasn't easy but it was worth it because we didn't want to look back years later and wonder what could have been."

Ask us one thing

What's the one thing holding your return back?

Everyone's move gets stuck on something different — a 401k nobody will explain, RNOR timing, which city, whether the schools work out. Tell us yours in a sentence and we'll come back with a specific answer, not a brochure.

Question 1 of 3

No spam. Just a direct, useful answer.

Reason 1: Empty Nester Concerns

One of the biggest factors was thinking about our future as empty nesters:

"Fast forward 20 years when our kids grow up and are in college or outside the home - how does life look like abroad? I felt it would be lonely and hollow. Even though you have great friends and great neighbors, the lifestyle makes everyone busy with their own lives."

In India, we see a different possibility - a more dynamic life surrounded by family and community. That's why we wanted to move while kids are still young. It allows them to adjust and it's a decision that's fair for them too.

Reason 2: Nuclear Family vs Extended Support

"Living abroad often means being part of a nuclear family - you, spouse, and kids. It's wonderful in many ways, you get to spend lot of time together evenings and weekends. However, time with extended family is limited."

As we get older and eventually pass on, who is there for kids? Is it siblings? I personally think having family support is invaluable.

In India, kids get opportunity to spend more time with:

  • Cousins and distant relatives
  • Grandparents
  • Extended family on regular occasions

These bonds create a support structure that's hard to replicate. The time grandkids enjoy with grandparents - seeing my parents pampering the kids, sharing stories, just enjoying time together - is priceless. It benefits both kids and parents, and this is something that can only be done when kids are still young, creating memories for a lifetime.

Reason 3: Kids Development

"Life abroad is very structured and organized which has its advantages, but kids raised in such environment may find it harder to adapt in India later in life. On the flip side, kids growing up in India are very adaptable - they can survive in India or anywhere in the world."

Skills Kids Develop in India

🧠 Jugaad

Creative problem-solving - finding innovative solutions with limited resources

🏆 Competitive Spirit

Prepares them to thrive anywhere in the world

🌍 Adaptability

Can adjust to any environment, any situation

⚽ Outdoor Play

Soccer, cricket, basketball with friends in the community

I personally feel kids in India get more opportunity to spend time outdoor - playing soccer, cricket, basketball with friends in the community. This is the lifestyle and childhood we want our kids to experience as they grow up.

Reason 4: Lifestyle Choice

Yes, things like traffic and pollution are better abroad. But for us, having a support system is more important.

"If I get sick or my wife gets sick or worse both of us are sick, we still have to get up, take care of things, get kids ready, drop them to school. There isn't a support structure abroad - I'm sure friends help but it's different dynamics. In India, the support structure is much more conducive and helpful in these situations."

The Support System Difference

🇺🇸 Abroad

  • Friends help but different dynamics
  • Everyone busy with own lives
  • Do everything yourself
  • Expensive services

🇮🇳 India

  • Family support readily available
  • Services and help accessible
  • Frees up time for important things
  • Luxurious life for less money

Services and help are more accessible in India. This frees up a lot of time to focus on important things that are much more valuable. It's like living a luxurious life for the money you spend. It's a choice between:

  • Organized but isolated lifestyle abroad
  • Dynamic lifestyle with support, services, and help in India

Reason 5: Financial Flexibility

"I wanted financial flexibility to leave the corporate world and have the option to follow passion, experience life, and not work just for money. This gives a lot more flexibility and experiences in life."

What Financial Flexibility Enables

1

Leave Corporate World

Not tied to a job just for money or visa status

2

Follow Passion

Do what you love - like starting DesiReturn to help others

3

Experience Life

Travel, explore, spend time with family

4

Choose Your Lifestyle

India provides variety - money stretches further

India provides a wide variety of lifestyles where your money can stretch a lot. You can choose the lifestyle you want based on your preference. As part of the move, I decided to leave the corporate world and have a lifestyle where I can follow passions, do different things, and experience life.

In Summary

These are the reasons why we as a family decided to move to India - to provide an environment that aligns with our priorities as a family and not to have regrets in life.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should every NRI leave the US after 20 years and return to India?

No. This story is not a universal rule. The move made sense because this family's priorities had shifted toward extended family, kids' adaptability, support system, financial flexibility, and avoiding regret. Families should still stress-test career, schools, city fit, taxes, healthcare, housing, and spouse alignment before copying the decision.

What should families check before moving back from the US to India with kids?

Check school timing, board choice, child age, language comfort, city and neighborhood, healthcare access, parent support, spouse career, tax residency, US assets, housing, and a realistic trial-stay or backup plan. The emotional reason can start the move, but these execution details decide whether the return is sustainable.

Why do some NRIs worry about being empty nesters abroad?

Life abroad when kids leave can feel lonely and hollow. Even with great friends, everyone is busy with their own lives. In India, there's a more dynamic life surrounded by family and community. Moving while kids are young allows them to adjust and is fair for them too.

What is the difference between nuclear family abroad and extended family in India?

Abroad means nuclear family - you, spouse, kids. Time with extended family is limited. In India, kids spend more time with cousins, relatives, grandparents. These bonds create a support structure that's hard to replicate. Grandparents time with grandkids creates memories for a lifetime.

How does growing up in India help kids become more adaptable?

Kids abroad grow up in structured environments but may find it harder to adapt later. Kids in India develop jugaad, competitive spirit, and adaptability - they can thrive anywhere. They also get more outdoor play time with friends in the community.

Why is having a support system important when choosing where to live?

If both parents get sick abroad, there's no support structure - you still have to manage everything. In India, support is more conducive. Services and help are accessible, freeing up time for important things. It's like living luxuriously for the money you spend.

How does financial flexibility factor into the decision to move to India?

India provides lifestyle variety where money stretches further. This enables leaving corporate world to follow passion and experience life - not just work for money. You can choose your lifestyle based on preference with more flexibility.

What role does avoiding regrets play in the decision to move?

Comfortable life makes it tempting not to rock the boat. But living without regrets is important. Instead of wondering 'what if' years later, evaluate options and take the leap. It wasn't easy but worth it to not look back wondering what could have been.

Why is it important to move while kids are still young?

Moving while kids are young can make transition easier, especially before school boards and peer groups become harder to change. It also gives children more years with grandparents, cousins, relatives, language, festivals, and everyday India exposure.

How do priorities change as life stages change?

Early life abroad often rewards career growth, exploration, and financial building. Later, family support, community, purpose, children's roots, parent care, and freedom from corporate pressure can become more important. The right country depends on which environment supports the current life stage.
